Course Description: | |
Advanced Product Design and Innovation is a Capstone course for a Manufacturing and Design pathway. The course integrates concepts and skills from the Manufacturing and Product Development Sector with applications in mathematics, English, science, social science, and art. This is a competency-based course which provides students with project-based learning (PBL) opportunities to design -- and follow-through post-design – innovative and cost effective products. This course affords advanced manufacturing students the opportunity to specialize in a particular area of interest, expand their expertise in a particular specialization and develop more advanced knowledge and skills: i.e., designing, rendering, sketching, inventing, model making, CAD, 3D printing, 3D modeling, CNC use, welding, plasma cutting, Laser use, and engaging in manufacturing and product development. Students enhance their abilities to think as product designers through project based learning, presentations, discussions and critiques. Students apply the craft skills required to design and produce manufactured capstone products that meet current industry standards. Students make connections between product development, mathematics and English through projects that include analysis of product designs and determination of efficient use of resources (product material, manufacturing process, human).This course also covers legal and regulatory issues, ethical and professional protocols, and the development of college and career success knowledge and skills as well as employability skills through job shadowing and internships. The competencies in this course are aligned with the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards and the Common Core State Standards. This course provides the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and technical skills through a hands-on curriculum that meets pre-apprenticeship requirements for the National Institute for Metalworking Skills. | |
