CTE: Arts, Media, and Entertainment Industry Sector

Career Pathways offered by San Diego Unified:

Of all the industry sectors, the Arts, Media, and Entertainment (AME) sector requires perhaps the greatest cross-disciplinary interaction in the development and completion of its works. Most careers in this sector are project-based, requiring professionals to work independently and manage themselves effectively in highly skilled and specialized roles. Technological advancements in this sector are constantly reshaping the boundaries and skill sets of many AME career pathways. Consequently, many core arts occupations demand varying combinations of artistic imagination, metaphoric representation, and symbolic connections, while having to adapt to the ever-changing technological landscape. Successful career preparation in this sector involves both in-depth and broad academic preparation as well as the cultivation of such intangible assets as flexibility, problem-solving abilities, marketing savvy, an entrepreneurial spirit, and interpersonal skills.

Foundation coursework in the AME career pathways makes explicit the appropriate knowledge, skills, and practical experience students need to enter a specific occupation. Exposure to the various avenues of postsecondary, collegiate, and graduate education, as well as the importance of internships, illuminates the variety of educational opportunities available. Intermediate and advanced courses increase students’ skills and knowledge in a particular area of AME study—a necessity to succeed in the competitive and media-rich twenty -first century. Through the manipulation of sight, sound, and motion, students choosing a pathway in this sector reach out in unique ways to enhance the quality of life for those around them.
