Music Grade 4

Grade Range:
 4
Notes:
 Strands emphasized:
Creating performing; responding, connecting
Course Description:
In this course, students will create, perform, respond, and connect to music at the developmentally appropriate level according to state and national standards. Students in grade 4 focus on working independently and collaboratively to manipulate and refine musical elements. While performing, students demonstrate more precise accuracy, improved expression, and fundamental vocal and instrumental technique. They contrast, adjust, and add timbres and textures as they develop independence and control. They contribute to the rehearsal and revision processes for performances and their own creative work. Structural elements such as meter, scale (diatonic/pentatonic), tonality (major/minor) are described, analyzed, and incorporated. When creating original musical ideas through improvisation and composition, students will layer rhythms and incorporate harmony, while striving to convey a mood or intent based on the purpose or context of the piece. Active listening, reflection, selection, and evaluation skills are more specifically taught, and students are asked to explain connections between a wide variety of music and its intent, purpose, or context. Students further develop their understanding of diverse expectations of performance decorum and audience etiquette in a variety of formal and informal performances.
