Course Description: |
| This course prepares young adult students with disabilities with skills to increase their self-advocacy and further develop a sense of agency in daily life. Students work toward course learning objectives in a community-based setting based on their individual learning needs. This course covers effective skills for making choices and managing one’s life including goal setting and problem-solving. Students learn behaviors associated with self-advocacy and safety in relationships including recognizing the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships. Students learn how to access community resources that can provide legal services. Students learn how to view the media critically and learn ways to practice civic responsibility and global citizenship. They become familiar with voting rights and the democratic process, as well as knowing their individual legal rights and responsibilities. Other topics include governmental taxes and fees common for young adults, including federal and state income tax filing. |
