Visual and Performing ArtsArts and music are defined as a part of a “well-rounded” education as defined by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), passed by Congress in 2015. This places the arts as important to education as language arts, mathematics, history, science, and foreign languages. Furthermore, the California Education Code mandates study of the visual and performing arts (dance, music, theatre, and visual art) for grades 1 through 6 (Section 51210), and requires arts courses to be offered to grades 7 through 12 (Section 51220). Courses shall be aimed at the development of aesthetic appreciation and the skills of creative expression, and shall follow state-adopted standards. San Diego Unified requires at least one year-long high school f-credit visual and performing arts course for high school graduation. The CSU and UC school systems also require at least one VAPA course as part of their admission requirements. |
