Mathematics

Mathematicians are knowledgeable, can apply their thinking when making sense of the world, and can communicate their reasoning as active critical thinkers and problem solvers. With this vision, the San Diego Unified School District’s mathematics program is designed to engage students in rigorous and relevant mathematics to solve problems associated with personal, civic, and professional contexts. Mathematics classrooms are places where students engage in productive discourse and write about their unique process, application, and perspective to a variety of audiences.

Across grades TK–12, students build an understanding of the content, the conceptual strands of mathematics: number sense and operations; functions and algebra; measurement, geometry, and data analysis; and statistics and probability. In addition, they develop proficiency in the mathematical processes: quantitative literacy, computational fluency, problem solving, using representations, using reason and proof, communicating, and making connections.
