Course Description:
Biology the Living Earth, is a lab-based NGSS course that will explore standard biological and earth science concepts from a phenomena-based approach taught using ASL. Students will apply their knowledge of Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) to various real-world phenomena such as local ecosystems, human impacts and identity, contextualized into a “storyline.” Using the structure of the High School 3-course model from the California Science Framework, earth and space science concepts will be incorporated at logical points in the curriculum to enhance student learning. Throughout the course, students build an understanding of life and how life adapts over time in response to a changing environment. Students will view these phenomena through the lenses of the Crosscutting Concepts (CCC’s), such as energy and matter (relationships in ecosystems, earth’s atmosphere) or structure and function (cells, mitosis and cancer, or evidence for evolution). Students will demonstrate their knowledge in use through their engagement in the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) during hands-on activities and labs in each instructional segment.
