Course Description: |
| Rock Ensemble is a performance-based music class in which students learn to collaborate musically in a variety of combinations with one another. Through supervised rehearsals, classes will cover performance techniques utilized in contemporary musical idioms including rock, pop, blues, hip-hop, funk, punk, and metal. Students will gain experience in performing both old, current, and original material. Emphasis will be placed on stylistic integrity, as well as melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic accuracy. Students will listen critically to a wide variety of both professional and amateur recordings, applying musical vocabulary learned in the course to analyze and constructively criticize what they hear. Students will learn processes for arranging existing songs, improvising expressive solos over standard chord progressions, and writing their own original songs. Students will research the historical and cultural context of the ensemble’s performance repertoire and prepare presentations for the class. |
