Course Description:
Essential American Literature 1,2 is a one-period literacy course intended for students with cognitive disabilities in grades 9-12 or adult transition who are eligible to take the California Alternative Assessment (CAA). This course will provide evidence-based instruction aligned with alternate achievement standards, called the Core Content Connectors (CCCs), and linked to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts.

This course emphasizes skills and strategies for independent reading of, analyzing, and writing about works of American literature, with a focus on how that literature reflects social, political, and moral issues in the United States. Instruction in each standards-based unit of study integrates reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language study. Students are provided with multiple opportunities to articulate their own ideas as well as to question, interpret, analyze, extend, and evaluate others’ ideas. The goal of instruction is to support students in becoming independent, strategic, critical readers, writers, listeners, and speakers who communicate effectively in various forms, for genuine purposes, and to authentic audiences.

Adaptations, modifications and access to assistive technologies will be available based on the assessed needs of individual students and may incorporate the functional application of English Language Arts skills that include community based components to promote generalization of skills and independence.
