Music Grade 3

Grade Range:
 3
Notes:
 Strands emphasized:
Creating; performing; responding; connecting
Course Description:
In this course, students will create, perform, respond, and connect to music at the developmentally appropriate level according to state and national standards. This course deepens students’ understanding of musical concepts and notation learned in previous grades. Students refine their accuracy of technique and range of expression during music-making and movement, while using historically and culturally diverse music. Students recognize and apply structural staff elements, standard music notation, and basic music symbols and abbreviations. They compare and contrast forms, meters, articulations, and textures. They experience the full creative cycle for improvisation and composition: generating, notating, refining, and presenting musical ideas for a purpose or within a structure. Students have opportunities to select music to perform or listen to, evaluate music based on criteria, and describe their thinking about music. At this grade level, making connections to context is a focus area. Students experience performances/concerts as both an audience member and performer, and additionally demonstrate decorum during entrances, exits, and transitions.
