Course Description: | |
This course is designed for students in the Mandarin Immersion pathway who have completed the prerequisite coursework for the level and are ready to begin a rigorous year of study that includes exposure to and appreciation of classic Chinese literary works. Instruction takes place almost entirely in Mandarin and students are required to speak exclusively in that language when participating in classroom discussions, activities, and conversations. Students acquire and practice using more formal vocabulary and expressions in order to communicate coherently and cohesively in all three language modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational). Literary texts are included as required reading for the first time and introduce students to important formal written expressions in preparations for advanced-level study. Students continue to build cutural knowledge and awareness through the course content, as this is an essential component of learning the language. A "Cultural Highlights" feature in each unit of study further illuminates a specific aspect of Chinese culture. | |
