Course Description: | |
The purpose of The Writer as Activist is to understand how writing can be used to advocate for social and political change and students will examine and apply techniques of literary activism. To achieve this, The Writer as Activist presents students with a variety of forms of writing (script, novel, poetry, speech, and historical/informational text), literary vocabulary (documentary, satire, persuasion, argument), professional expectations of format and genre (formatting script), collaboration, and introduces students to professional writers. In addition to the typical academic study of writing, through analytical/expository and argumentative speaking and writing, students will also become writers themselves and research and write in various forms to develop their unique voice as a literary activist. By the end of this course, students will have written and produced the following forms: script/documentary, poetry, essay, fiction, and speech. | |
