Course Description: | |
In this course, students will create, perform, respond, and connect to music at the developmentally appropriate level according to state and national standards. This course adds context, depth, and symbols to the skills developed in first grade. Students aurally recognize, describe, notate, and perform musical concepts with more accuracy. They learn to read and notate simple musical symbols and melodic notation (in addition to iconic notation), and differentiate between duple and triple meter. Students improvise and compose music in a structure or for a purpose, and document and share their musical patterns using iconic or standard notation. Students are regularly asked to give and defend their opinions, such as why music concepts are used in a piece, how the music expresses a mood, or why they would select a piece to perform. They listen to, perform, and move to a variety of music and make larger connections between music, culture, society, and self. Opportunities to share and reflect occur at regular intervals, cultivating community and promoting development of audience and performance etiquette. | |
