| | The purpose of The Writer as Artist is to introduce students to the idea that writing is a profession and art and not just an academic study. In studying this art, students will be given foundational understanding of the role of the writer in society as well as the rhetorical and literary techniques writers use to develop their art as well as language of the writing profession. To achieve this, The Writer as Artist presents students with a variety of forms of writing (e.g. screenplay, dramatic script, short story, novel, poetry, and nonfiction), language of writing (e.g. genre, rhetorical and literary devices), marketing tools (e.g. pitches) writers use to sell their ideas and works, and introduces students to professional writers and published authors. In addition to the typical academic study of writing, through analytical/expository and argumentative speaking and writing, students will also become writers themselves and write in various forms to develop their unique voice and style. By the end of this course, students will have written over ten compositions, most of them multi-paragraph compositions, in a variety of modes: narrative, expository, persuasion, analysis, and verse. In addition, they will be compiling a writing portfolio and reflecting on their strengths and weaknesses as well as their development as a writer and artist. |
